The seventies was a time where women were doing everything they could to be natural, which was a huge change from the fifties and sixties when women spent hours sleeping on hair curlers and primping their hair to perfection. Some of the seventies hairstyles were a bit out of control but you will find that many of these natural hairstyles have survived the tides of time and are popular today, perhaps with a slight different spin on it but the original style is still there.
There were far less hair accessories during this time, such as hair straighteners which meant these women had to go the extra mile and use what they had available to achieve this natural and flowing look.
In this time, women actually used a regular clothing iron to straighten their hair. Although this took quite a bit of time, it would last for several days before they were forced to wash their hair and start all over. Girls would take turns ironing each other's hair, inch by inch being careful not to scorch the hair. Today, the straight look is still very much in style but the hair straighteners make it that much easier to achieve this classic look.
The afro was another hairstyle that was adapted during the seventies and is still seen today. Black men and women would grow out their hair during this time of black power and pride to show that beauty was not only found in one shape or form. Today this same hairstyle is still seen everywhere and is not likely to ever go out of style!
There is one popular hairstyle of the seventies that has never come back into style today and that is the mullet. The basics of the mullet were to cut the hair quite short on the sides and on the top and then letting the back grow much longer. Although this was a great look for the rock and roll days of the seventies, it has never quite made its way back into the trends of hair fashion today!
Of course the Ferrah Fawcett feathered look was a look every young girl wanted during the seventies. Today, you will find that this look's popularity has hardly died out as many young girls are still wearing this classic look and updating it very little. Actually this is one of the more popular hairstyles that are in fact quite easy to achieve. Simply blow dry your hair in an up and under motion to get the volume for the style then blow dry around the face up and over to get that feathered look; almost no products required!
It is amazing the difference between the maintained hairstyles of today and the free and natural styles that were so popular in the seventies. There were almost no products used and the more natural the better! This list is just a short example of the different types of popular hairstyles of this time and how they survived the different generations. Many of these classic hairstyles can still be found today, whether they have been slightly altered or not, but there are a few like the mullet which are not likely to ever return!
Of course the seventies is not the only era which has been reappearing in the many different trend areas of today, but it is the most prominent.
